Industrial drill bits are designed for precision hole making in metalworking, machining, fabrication, and production drilling environments where accuracy, tool life, and repeatable performance matter. Carbide drill bits are typically used for higher speed machining, improved wear resistance, and longer tool life in production environments, especially when drilling hardened steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and abrasive materials. Cobalt drill bits are often selected for drilling stainless steel and tougher alloys where added heat resistance is needed. High speed steel drill bits remain a versatile and economical option for general-purpose drilling in steel, aluminum, and other common shop materials. Coated drill bits, including titanium nitride and other performance coatings, may also improve lubricity, wear resistance, and tool life depending on the application.

 

Drill bit geometry also plays a major role in cutting performance. Point angle, flute design, helix geometry, coating, and overall rigidity all affect chip evacuation, heat control, surface finish, and hole accuracy. Stub length drill bits are often preferred in rigid setups where reduced deflection improves accuracy, while longer drills are used when additional reach is necessary. Split point and self-centering geometries can help reduce walking and improve penetration in metal cutting applications. Selecting the proper geometry for the material and machine helps improve tool life and overall drilling efficiency.
