End Milling Cutters for Machining Applications

End milling cutters are rotary cutting tools designed to remove material with cutting edges on the end of the tool, along its sides or both. This allows an end mill cutter to perform operations that a conventional drill cannot, including slotting, profiling, pocketing, contouring, ramping, roughing and finishing.

Choose the end mill geometry according to the feature being machined. Square end mills produce flat-bottomed slots and pockets with square shoulders. Ball nose end mills follow curved profiles and are commonly used for mold, die and 3D contour work. Corner radius end mills combine a mostly flat cutting end with reinforced corners that help resist chipping. Roughing end mills use serrated cutting edges to break chips while removing stock efficiently, while chamfer mills create beveled edges, countersinks and deburred features.

For demanding or repetitive production, solid carbide is generally the preferred cutting-tool substrate because it supports higher cutting speeds and offers excellent wear resistance in a rigid setup. Cobalt end milling cutters remain useful where greater toughness is needed or where machine rigidity is limited.

Choosing the Right End Mills

The best end mills for a job depend on the workpiece material, operation, required surface finish and rigidity of the machine and setup. Begin with the bit category, then choose the cutter diameter, substrate, type, flutes, coating and brand.

Fewer flutes provide larger chip spaces. Two-flute end mills are therefore frequently selected for slotting and materials that produce large chips. Three-flute tools offer a useful balance of chip clearance and cutting-edge engagement, particularly in aluminum. Four-flute end mills are widely used for steel, profiling and general-purpose milling. Five-, six- and higher-flute tools can improve finishing and productivity in suitable applications where there is enough room to evacuate chips.

Use shorter tools whenever possible because reduced reach generally improves rigidity and limits deflection. Select an extended reach or extra long end mill only when the part geometry requires it.

For plunge cutting, confirm that the CNC end mill is center cutting; non-center-cutting tools must enter the work through a ramp, helical path or previously machined opening.  Most end mills are center cutting.

Before machining, consult our end mill size chart, review end mill dimensions and geometry, and calculate an appropriate starting point with the speeds and feeds calculator.

Milling Bits by Material, Geometry and Operation

Milling bits should be matched to both the workpiece and the way the cut will be made. For aluminum and other nonferrous materials, look for polished or purpose-designed cutting edges, generous flute space and coatings that discourage material adhesion. Steel milling generally benefits from stronger cutting edges and wear-resistant coatings. Stainless steel, titanium and high-temperature alloys require milling bits designed to control heat, work hardening and cutting forces.
